Title - The Modern Preserver
Client - Kylee Newton + Square Peg Random House & Quadrille
Year - 2015 & 2021
Discipline - Art direction & book design
An ongoing collaboration* with Kylee Newton, the eponymous Modern Preserver.
Following on from her best selling first book (see below) The Modern Preserver's Kitchen teaches the reader not only how to preserve but also how to cook and eat with them once made. Working closely with the editorial team and author we created a series of templates that allow the twister-plot nature of the book to come through. Often recipes reference several other parts of the book so image pairings of the preserve and the meal, as well as alternating alignments and double page spreads help steer the reader to delve deeper into the book.

The Modern Preserver
2015
Alongside Kylee Newton the author the shoot was directed to create both a break within the repetition of jar shots and inspire the reader to experiment with how they eat their preserves.
Given the book's title, for the cover we opted again for something that wasn't too obvious but defined the process. Taking inspiration from various photography books we flipped the belly wrap over the cover and cropped in tightly to the image. Years (and tens of thousands of sales) later it is seen as a modern classic in the genre.
